Press Release | 12.06.2022

Worth seeing motorsport rarities from six decades showed nostalgic racing action at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday and Sunday; Pitlane Walk with unique insights into the world of historic racing; Return to Murtal planned in 2023.

Austrian premiere made to measure: Around 8,000 motorsport fans made the pilgrimage to the Red Bull Ring this weekend to experience unique motorsport classics from past decades in racing action at the first edition of the Austrian Historic. And the historic cars delivered what the spectators in the stands expected: Loud engines, duels worth seeing as well as thrilling racing action on both days. The supporting program on the weekend with pitlane walk and hot laps in the 830 hp Ferrari 296 GTB also thrilled the fans.

PITLANE WALK WITH ARTURO MERZARIO AS SPECTATOR MAGNET

At the Pitlane Walk on Saturday and Sunday, fans were given an unusual insight into the top classes of historic motorsport. Some of the cars were around 60 years old, such as the BRM P261, the Cooper T45/51 or the legendary Ferrari 156 with its striking Sharknose design, and could be viewed up close in their original race-ready condition. Speaking of legendary: 79-year-old former Formula 1 racing driver Arturo Merzario not only signed autographs, but also drove the Ferrari 156 himself around the 4.318-kilometer Red Bull Ring. The Italian Merzario, a former Ferrari works driver, rescued Niki Lauda in the latter's fire accident at the 1976 German Grand Prix with the assistance of other drivers.

MASTERS HISTORIC RACING WITH FOUR SPECTACULAR SERIES

Masters Gentlemen Drivers (with classics such as the Shelby American Cobra Daytona), Masters Sports Car Legends (including the 1971 Lola T212), Masters Endurance Legends (prototypes and GT racing cars between 1995 and 2016 inclusive) and Masters Racing Legends with historic F1 bolides from 1966 to 1985: no less than four spectacular series with numerous historic bolides started under the title Masters Historic Racing at the Red Bull Ring. The Masters Historic Racing format has been thrilling fans all over the world for years, and the Austrian premiere in Murtal was no exception. "We are proud that we were able to bring this unique driver field of history-rich bolides to Styria as part of the Austrian Historic," said organizer Christoph Gerlach (BG Sportpromotion) after the Austrian Historic premiere at the Red Bull Ring.

AUSTRIAN HISTORIC RETURNS TO THE RED BULL RING IN 2023

The pre-66 Grand Prix Cars with Formula 1 bolides from the pre-1966 era, the Lurani Trophy (a forerunner of today's up-and-coming Formula 4) as well as the legendary Formula VAU, which featured domestic motorsport greats such as Dr. Helmut Marko, Niki Lauda and Dieter Quester once all passed through, completed an unprecedented historic motorsport weekend at the Red Bull Ring - which is to find its continuation in 2023: "The positive response of the many fans in the stands and the Red Bull Ring as the perfect location: the Austrian Historic will again take place in the Murtal in 2023," concludes Rene Binna, Managing Director BG Sportpromotion.
